Bike commute, here I come

A couple of days ago I posed the question of “To bike commute or not to bike commute.” The consensus leaned towards “to bike.” The only negative response I’ve really received is from my mom who is worried about my riding a bike on busy city streets.

I have permission from my boss, a place to store a bike, access to a shower if I need it and a ridiculously short commute. It seems like everything is lining up for me to become a bike-commuter.

Well, except for one, minor detail: I don’t have a bike.

I began the process of remedying that this weekend as I went to testride a couple of cycles. The first was a Fuji Crosstown 3.0 and I didn’t really love it. The gears felt a little loose and the brakes were tight but squeaked pretty badly. I realize that the shop could tweak those issues, but it rubbed me the wrong way that there were already problems. The second bike I rode was a Giant Sedona DX (the bike in the picture) – and I loved it. It was smooth, felt like it was very solid and handled potholes and other dips like a champ. The only problem? The bike I rode was the last one in stock. And the last that the store is going to get (according to the salesman). The next shipment will be the 2009 models and they’re going up by 20%. That’s a lot of cash.

So I’m still looking. But I’m well on my way.

Any additional bike-related input you want to share as I continue my search?

  • Glad to hear you’re a bit closer to taking the cycling plunge. I’m disappointed that the Fuji you tried out wasn’t quite right; I didn’t, and still don’t, have such problems with mine.

Tom Sawyer (at Broadway and Mt. Vernon) also carries Giants–maybe they’ll have the model you tried.

    Good luck.

  • You need to check out the Kon Ute. Sweet commuter bike. I was close to grabbing one, but opted for a scooter.

  • I’d also like to add that you should definitely get all, & I mean all, of the necessary safety gear if only because you would look awesome. You should also consider getting a razor scooter instead to save money. You would still need all the safety gear because you would look even awesomer with it on a razor. Even if you don’t get all the safety gear I will continue to envision you as if you did because it makes me happy.

    He loves his razor!

  • Vince, I checked out that site, but unfortunately, there aren’t any Kona dealers near Wichita.

Sadness. They looked like cool bikes.

  • I am just glad you figured out ‘Kona’ when I didn’t even spell it right

  • I’m currently saving my pennies nickels and dimes for a Cannondale Bad Boy. I hope to join you in your Bicycle commuterdom soon.

P.S you do have a helmet, yes????
